A certain clan of Atsirian nomads was isolated for some time from other nomadic tribes, and as a result, inbreeding became common for a certain period of time. Cousins married cousins and so forth, and the family became more of a vast, great spiderweb than a tree or a line. As a result, some diseases sprung up in the line, one of which was albinism. This was deadly to have in the unrelenting Atsirian sun, and many of the family's lineage died due to it. Those that survived still carried the disease in their blood, even if it did not affect their physical appearance. Some of those known to carry it--the siblings or parents of the albinos--withdrew themselves from the clan, and began to wander on their own. They continued their lives, and more albinos were born from time to time. Some survived, while most died in the Atsirian sun.

After some while, the members of this smaller clan began to mark themselves with a simple pattern--three flower petals on the forehead. The mark was given to the members as children, and while most Atsirian nomads didn't care about those who bore it, it was a perpetual marker--this one is dangerous. Most nomads disregarded it, but it was always there. While those born to families that included "outsiders" were not given the mark, those born within the tribe always were.

One year in Atsiria, a small child, no older than perhaps four, was found wandering near one nomadic camp. He wore a very heavy cloak, despite the heat of the sun, and when the members of the tribe took him in, they found that his hair was pale, as well as his skin, and he bore the mark on his forehead. He had clearly been separated from his tribe, and out of their own goodwill, the other tribe took him in. Upon asking his name, they gave him the name "Jakob," since it sounded close to what he was trying to say his name was. They taught him the arts of the bow, and he took to them with ease. Raised as the son of one of the nomads, he was told of his past when he was 11, and continued training with the tribe for two more years. At 13 he was given his own horse, and he took the opportunity to leave the tribe, giving them his gratitude for raising him as their own. He left, complete with his heavy cloak, now much larger than the one he had worn at four.

For five years, he has been wandering Atsiria, trying to find a trail of the tribe he belongs to and was separated from. While he has found weak traces of his tribe from time to time, he has not yet been able to catch up to them or find any information about where they might be. He continues looking, however, his search for his true family an overarching influence in his life.

Loyalty and honor are easily the two things closest to his heart. He believes that his abandonment outside the tribe he was raised in was pure accident, and that his family never would have left him behind like that on purpose. However, he does suffer a lot of fear trying to convince himself of this--what if they did leave him because he was unwanted, or because his albinism was seen as a curse? It's one of the reasons he searches for them so desperately--because he needs to be reasserted that his life is worth living.

Because of these fears, he tends to have very low self-esteem, seeing himself as incapable of doing anything worthwhile in his life. The virtues of strength and honesty, passed down to him from the nomads he was raised by, weigh heavily on his behavior, but no matter what he does he always feels that someone else could do better, that someone else could help people more than ever he could. Nevertheless, he tries, and he is happy to see other people happy.

Along with the fears about his original tribe having abandoned him, he fears that they may be dead. The trails he has followed over the years have gotten progressively weaker, and he worries that the tribe is down to a few sparse numbers, if there are any left at all. Partly because of this, he places a great value on life, and feels great remorse when someone dies, even if he didn't know them.

He tends to second-guess himself. Asks himself if what he's doing is really worthwhile, if he could be making something of his life with all the time he's spent searching. He also is very easily depressed, even if he tends to keep many of those emotions to himself. He has a tendency to get sick and/or tired easily, but his determination often causes him to overwork himself, and he has been known to end up staying in cities to recover for days on end, sometimes weeks.

He is very fond of his horse, and regards it as the one steady, stable connection in his life.

The first thing that people notice about him is his shockingly pale hair, almost stark white, and his milky skin, trademark signs of albinism. He also bears the symbol on his forehead: three violet petal-shaped marks. His eyes are a pale blue-grey, and not the pink of some others with his condition. He's thin, and almost all the extra weight he has is muscle. He wears a heavy cloak over himself a lot, to keep the sun from his skin, and even underneath, the clothes he wears are ornate and cover much of his skin. He is almost feminine in appearance.
